The zebra finch is a small, social bird native to Australia that is also found in the wild in the Lesser Sunda Islands and East Timor. These birds are known for their distinctive black and white "zebra" bars on their chests, though males are more colourful with chestnut cheek patches, and their beaks are typically brighter red. They live in large flocks, are common in dry, wooded grasslands, and pair for life, with both parents sharing the responsibility of raising their young,
Physical characteristics
- Males: Have chestnut cheek patches, black and white barring across the chest, and a brighter red beak.
- Females: Lack the cheek patches and chest barring, and have an orange-colored beak.
- Size: Typically around 10cm
Housing and environment
- Cage size and type: Provide the largest possible cage, with horizontal space being more important than height for flight. A minimum for a pair could be about 76 x 46 x 46cm, with larger cages recommended for more birds.

- Location: Choose a quiet, secure spot away from drafts, direct sunlight, and heating/cooling vents to avoid stress and overheating.
- Temperature and light: Maintain a temperature between 20 - 25c and ensure a consistent day-night light cycle (around 10-12 hours of light). Avoid continuous light.
- Cleanliness: Keep the cage clean, as finches are sensitive to airborne chemicals and poor hygiene. A removable grate at the bottom with paper bedding underneath can help.
- Enrichment: Include various perches of different sizes, swings, or other toys to provide foot exercise and stimulation.
Diet and water
- Food: Feed a high-quality finch seed mix and supplement with fresh fruits and vegetables, avoiding toxic options like avocado, onion, and rhubarb. Millet sprays are a good treat.
- Forage Gourmet Finch Bird Seed
- Water: Provide fresh drinking water daily, along with a shallow dish for bathing several times a week.
- Minerals: Always make grit for digestion and a cuttlebone for calcium readily available.
Social and health needs
- Company: Zebra finches are social and thrive when housed with other finches.
- Stress reduction: Keep the environment stress-free by avoiding loud noises and sudden movements. They do not need to be in the busiest part of the house.
- Air quality: Ensure good air quality. Avoid using strong scents, smoke, or strong cooking fumes near the cage, as finches have a sensitive respiratory system.
