Moustache Parrots
They are sweet, charming birds which are excellent for the entire family. Moustache parrots are incredibly intelligent and enjoy a challenge. They are easy to train and are adequate talkers. They are medium-sized parrots that can grow up to 40 cm long and live between 20 and 25 years.
A Medium sized parrot around 33 to 44 cm long when fully mature with a weight from 100 to 130 grams when fully grown. Attractive birds with mostly green plumage with a line across the forehead with a violet blue coloration in the face. The plumage on the upper abdomen, throat and breast is pinkish salmon in color.
When looking for a cage to house your bird, you want to look for a cage that is large enough for your bird to stretch its wings and have a flap without hitting any toys food bowls of the side of the cage. Your cage must have room for at least 3 to 4 toys and 3 food bowls. Keeping all this in mind buying the largest cage you can afford to make sure your bird remains happy healthy and tame.
- Bird Perches: Provide a variety of perches, preferably made of natural wood, to help keep feet healthy.
- Out-of-cage time: Ensure a minimum of four hours of supervised playtime daily in a safe, "bird-proofed" room.
- Safety: Make sure the room is free of hazards, especially since Moustaches can fly. Protect from direct sun and rain if outdoors.
- Cleaning: Thoroughly clean the cage, dishes, and perches weekly with bird-safe products.
- Fresh foods: Supplement with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables like melon, apple, carrots, kale, and collard greens.
- Foods to avoid: Never feed avocado, as it is toxic to parrots.
- Supplements: Indoor birds may require a Vitamin D3 and Calcium supplement.
- Water: Always provide fresh, clean water daily.
- Stimulation: Offer toys that encourage natural foraging behavior and puzzle toys to keep their minds engaged.
- Preening toys: Include toys with strings, beads, or leather to allow for preening, which can help prevent feather-plucking.
- Interaction: Spend time with your parrot to build trust and prevent behavioral problems.
