Regular Maintenance

This series will be going over the maintenance that will be a regular requirement for a healthy aquarium. These are smaller simpler tasks that are the reason why aquariums are considered such enjoyable options for keeping pets. We’ll be covering the following topics:

  • Feeding your fish

  • Water Changes

  • Algae Scrubbing

  • Filter Maintenance

  • Plant trimming

Filter Maintenance

Filters are the life source to your aquarium. Filters provide flow for oxygenated water, pull physical waste out of the water and also allow for the concentration of organic chemical wastes to be significantly decreased. It’s important to clean your filter, as a dirty filter can be underperforming.

A simple task to do every 3-4 weeks is pull out your filter sponges and give them a rinse in some dechlorinated water (or old tank water from your water change that week). It is also important to scrub the casing, tubes, and the impeller. There are different types of filters (hyperlink to our article on filters) and the process to cleaning them is different due to their different filtration methods. See your filter manual or ask us for advice.
