Algae Scrubbing

Algae is a common occurrence in every aquarium, especially when it has a new cycle. Algae is caused if there is too much light or nutrients, as it will grow to compensate. There are different types of algae that can grow from different causes (Types of Algae, causes and treatments - hyperlink), and the best way to minimise it is to avoid overfeeding (view our article on the best food for fish/pellets vs flakes) and limiting your aquarium light to 8-10hrs a day. Additionally, as per our recommendation in (Setting up your first aquarium- hyperlink), keep your aquarium away from windows.

While algae is not harmful to fish (most deaths related to algae is from oxygen depletion), it can hinder your ability to view the inside of your aquarium. Algae likes growing on large flat surfaces, like your tank glass! This means that another weekly activity involved in caring for your tank is cleaning all the glass panels. This can be done fairly easily with a scourer or aquarium brush.
